Lure Course

Do we have to Leave MOM!

Do we have to leave MOM!

What is lure coursing?

Lure coursing can also be described as a fast-paced chase sport. Dogs run after a "bunny" lure (usually a white plastic bag) that is attached to a line. They run in an open field and run as fast or slow as they want.

This is something I have been taking Mila to and she LOVES it!! Basically it gets her need to run and hunt out and she has a great time doing something pretty simple.

We were first introduced into this at a Wag for Wishes event.

In case you are interested the group here in San Diego that hosts these events is
Luratics. I am not in any way affiliated with this group.

My dachshund just loves it maybe yours will too.   AKC - CAT Test

Earthdog

The purpose of Earthdog tests is to offer breeders and owners of small Terriers and Dachshunds a standardized gauge to measure their dogs natural and trained hunting and working abilities when exposed to a hunting situation. The program begins with a basic introduction to den work and quarry and progresses through gradual steps to require the dog to demonstrate that it is capable of being trained to follow game to ground and work its quarry (adult rats). Note that the quarry is always protected from being harmed by the dog.

Other Events sometimes held with Earthdog - Terrier & Barn hunt

Terrier Racing

Terrier Racing is a lot like Dachshund racing but the racing dogs must wear a Muzzle and they chase a lure. The first dog through the opening at the end is the winner.

Barn Hunt

is held in conjunction with earthdog events and terrier fun days, using various rules, and as something to enjoy with no pressure on handler or dog. But it has never been a sanctioned sport. Barn Hunt Association is in the creation stage of taking those various fun barn hunts, honoring the traditional role of “ratcatchers” in ridding barns of vermin, and opening it up to any dog, of (almost) any size, type or breed.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o2zWclnK_5k/UKa53d1V1DI/AAAAAAAAALU/bbZNuQtheqY/s320/bottomlogo+hunt5.gif

In order to pass this test a hound must score at least 5 on each of the 5 categories and an average of 6 for all categories when all judge’s scores are tallied. Stakes offered: Solo, Brace and 2-coupled Pack. Brace and Pack entries must be composed of hounds from the same breed.

This is not to be confused with Field Trials where the dachshunds compete against each other and is only open to full AKC dachshunds.
